Midsommar Barn Dance at the Colony School

Join us in Bishop Hill at our
Midsommar Music Fest
Saturday, June 20th
Making loud, merry music, erecting a maypole pole and covering it with flowers, and dancing with friends and family are the traditional activities associated with our celebration. It is a day set aside to express the absolute joy of the longest, brightest day of the year and you are invited to join in the fun!

Since agrarian times, Midsommar celebrations in Sweden have been held to welcome summertime and the season of fertility. This has become the most recognized of all Swedish traditional festivals and one that the residents and descendants of Bishop Hill’s settlers continue to celebrate annually on or around the summer solstice each June.
This year's lineup for the Main Stage Concert in the village park will start at 11am and will feature these performers:
Black Hawk Pipes & Drums
Wendy Anderson
The Mountain Men
Turas
Jazz On The Side

Dressing the Maypole will begin following the concert at 4 pm after which visitors will be invited to join a procession lead by Accordionist, Ernie Sandquist, to deliver the dressed Maypole to the Colony School. Here the festivities will continue with dancing and refreshments.

Barn Dance at 7pm
The Bishop Hill Old Settlers' Association is pleased to sponsor this event by hosting the Maypole Celebration and an old-fashioned Barn Dance in the Colony School. The dance will be called by Gail Hintze and music will be provided by the Rusty String Pickup Band. Admission to the dance is $5.00.

The Schoolhouse makes a wonderful setting for our events and is available to rent for yours. Take the opportunity at Midsommar to check out this light-filled spacious "school room" and well appointed kitchen. Consider renting it for your next private or public gathering.
