Colony Stew served at Bishop Hill's Jordbruksdagarna

Come for the Stew; Stay for the fun.
September 23 and 24th
Jordbruksdagarna in Bishop Hill
In 1972 the Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association participated in the first Jordbruksdagarna (earth works day) by preparing and serving a Swedish style meal. Each year since then, The Old Settlers have set up their tents and huge black kettle outside to cook this traditional Colony Stew which has, in time, become a festival favorite. Crowds line up for a hearty meal of beef and barley stew, hardtack, and rice pudding.
Many recipes have been passed down through Bishop Hill families and this Colony Beef Stew recipe is a perfect example. It was published in a Heritage cookbook decades ago, attributed to Beverly Spets, longtime resident and former Postmaster. Though it is scaled for a crowd, the proportions are easily converted to make a family sized meal. The original recipe is available at right to download; click the stewpot to print!
Even more fun than being a guest at our many events is being part of the team putting on the show, cooking up the delights, and rolling out the carpet for new friends. The Old Settlers are always happy to add new faces to their ranks. Good news: You don’t have to be old or a settler to hitch up to this group. We welcome anyone who wishes to keep these traditions rolling. Fun and fellowship are free to all interested – just use the email form to contact us. Next year you could stir that stew!
For more details about this event, call 309 927-3899 or email the Bishop Hill Heritage Association. Please see the full lineup of the weekend's activities below.

Celebrate Old Settlers' Day on September 9

For the 121th consecutive year, the Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association will be celebrating the 171st anniversary of the founding in 1846 of the Bishop Hill Colony on Saturday, September 9, 2017.  The day’s activities include a traditional chicken dinner, band concert, and program. From 11:30 am until 1 pm the traditional Old Settlers’ Day Chicken Dinner will be served at the historic Colony School.  This delicious meal features chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, Swedish rye bread, homemade pie, and good strong coffee. The $10/person cost includes beverage and dessert; for kids under 8 years the cost is $5.
In the afternoon activities shift to the Park’s Bandstand.  The Bishop Hill High Society Band will present a 12:30 p.m. concert.  Following the concert the annual program will start at 1:30 p.m.  This year’s speaker will be Ulla Voss, Sweden.  She will be discussing the connections between Bishop Hill, Illinois and Sweden today.  Paul Collinson will provide the music with songs.  The rain location for the High Society Band Concert and Program is the Bishop Hill Community United Methodist Church.
The day’s activities will end with a social time at the Colony School.  Coffee and Swedish rusks will be served while guests socialize.
Activities continue on Sunday, September 10, 2017 when the Colony School Reunion will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the Colony School.  All former students and who attended the Colony School and all who attended the country schools around Bishop Hill are invited to attend.  Teachers of those schools are also invited.  Bring pictures, memories and stories to share with old classmates, teachers, and friends.  Refreshments will be served.

For additional information on Old Settlers’ Day call 309-927-3044.

This set Galvaland Magazines can be yours

 Add these
to your library

The Galvaland Magazine was published by George Swank every two months from August, 1958, to January, 1996. It consists of 327 issues of approximately 20 pages each. The Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association has recently acquired a set these original volumes which includes an index and user’s guide.
These survived a house fire in Bishop Hill and are in good, albeit smoky condition. The BHOSA is offering this collection to any person or organization interested in adding a remarkable record of local historical news to their personal library. If you would like to claim them, please email the BHOSA President, Cinda Anderson, or call her at 309-927-3044.

Quilt Show at the Colony School in Bishop Hill

Quilt Show May 19th - 21st
Friday and Saturday 10-5 pm
Sunday 10-4 pm

I am always astounded at the variety, creativity and skill presented at the annual Prairie Queen Quilt Club Show. After sampling the entries this year, I have an urge to "stitch together" a new phrase to convey the artistry exhibited... but the perfect superlative to express such excellence escapes me! Come and see for yourself; the show will surely delight all.

The photos here give a sneak peek at just a few of the 100+ quilts on display in the Colony School at the 2017 themed show, Cats, Calico, and Cross Stitch. Included in the show are antique, miniature, patchwork, applique, and embroidered works.

Admission is $5.00. Proceeds from the show will be used for various charity quilts distributed to local hospitals, homes for the elderly, veterans, and children in need. The Prairie Queen Quilt Club Theme Challenge quilts will be on display in the Steeple Building Museum.
